Freshman Austin Goosby is one of 20 players on watch list for award that recognizes the top shooting guard in men’s college basketball.
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — University of Texas Men's Basketball freshman Austin Goosby is one of 20 preseason watch list candidates for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced Tuesday. Named after the late Class of 1980 Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player Jerry West, the annual honor now in its 13th year recognizes the top shooting guard in Division I men's college basketball.
The list will be narrowed down to 10 players in February with plans to announce the five finalists in March. The winner of the 2027 West Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date. The list will remain fluid, and players will have the ability to play themselves on or off the list until the five finalists are selected.
Goosby is the 24th player in Texas program history to participate in the McDonald's All-American Game and the 17th individual in school history to compete in the Jordan Brand Classic. He was tabbed the No. 18 recruit by 247 Sports, No. 20 by ESPN, No. 23 by 247 Sports Composite and No. 26 by On3 in the Class of 2026 national rankings.
Goosby attended Dynamic Prep (Irving, Texas) during his senior season and averaged 16.2 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 2.9 apg and 1.5 spg while leading the team to a 39-5 record and a run to the Chipotle Nationals semifinals. The team, competing as FaZe in the Overtime Elite (OTE) league, captured the OTE league championship with a perfect 20-0 record through the regular season and playoffs.
No. 7/7 Texas opens the 2026-27 regular season with a home contest against Chicago State on Monday, Nov. 2. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. Central in Moody Center, and the contest will be televised nationally by SEC Network.
