Summer catch: Where the returning Longhorns played summer ball

Winning the National Championship in June was not reason enough to take a break from the game for many of the Longhorns baseball players. Almost immediately upon their return to Austin after a successful trip to Omaha in June, many student-athletes packed their bags with bats and gloves and boarded flights that would take them to play for summer teams all over the country.
From Alaska to New England, the Longhorns temporarily set aside their burnt orange uniforms to don a new team¹s colors and play in popular collegiate summer leagues, including the Cape Cod Baseball League and the Texas Collegiate League. Two Longhorns also traveled abroad and represented the United States on the Team USA roster. Listed below are some of the highlights and statistics from their summer seasons:
Adrian Alaniz
- Played for the Hyannis Mets in the Cape Cod Baseball League with fellow Longhorns right-hander Randy Boone.
- Under head coach Greg King, logged 19.2 innings in four starts on the mound while fanning 18 batters.
Randy Boone
- Played for the Hyannis Mets in the Cape Cod Baseball League with fellow Longhorns right-hander Adrian Alaniz.
- Under head coach Greg King, made one start in which he went three innings and struck out a pair.
Zach Gallenkamp
- Played for the McKinney Marshals in the Texas Collegiate League (TCL) with fellow Longhorns right-hander Kenn Kasparek.
- Made four relief appearances for head coach Kyle Hope while limiting opponents to a .174 batting average against over 7.2 innings. & Helped his team finish as the TCL runner-up after compiling a 29-22 regular season record.
Todd Gilfillan
- Played for the Santa Barbara Foresters in the California Collegiate League (CCL) with fellow Longhorn Nick Peoples.
- Made 21 starts behind the plate for the Marshals and drove in 15 runs en route to helping the club compile a 51-10 overall record and claim the CCL Championship.
- Also went a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen bases for head coach Bill Pintard's club while scoring 18 runs and accounting for three doubles, one triple and and a .234 overall batting average.
Bryan Herrera
- Played for head coach Jack Giese's Coppell Copperheads in the Texas Collegiate League (TCL).
- Patrolled the outfield and made two relief appearances while helping the Copperheads win the Tris Speaker Division and advance to the TCL playoffs.
- Individually, he collected a 1-0 record on the mound for Coppell while also scoring two runs and driving in two more during the summer campaign.
Carson Kainer
- Played for head coach Cooper Farris and the Wareham Gatemen in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
- Amassed 13 hits, four of which were doubles, in his 56 at-bats for the Gatemen en route to a .232 average. Also tallied four RBI while scoring nine runs over the summer.
Kenn Kasparek
- Played for the McKinney Marshals in the Texas Collegiate League (TCL) with fellow Longhorns right-hander Zach Gallenkamp.
- Made four appearances, including one start, for head coach Kyle Hope's club and posted an earned run average of 0.56 after scattering six hits over 16 innings and fanning eight.
- Helped his team finish as the TCL runner-up after compiling a 29-22 regular season record.
Kyle McCulloch
- Played for head coach Steve Smith and Team USA with fellow Longhorn Drew Stubbs.
- Won each of his four starts while striking out 22 over 25 innings.
- Helped lead Team USA to a 16-4 overall record by personally boasting a 1.44 ERA and limiting opponents to a .220 batting average against.
- Named to the first team of the 2005 College Summer All-America squad as selected by Baseball America. Became only the third Longhorns player in history to earn Summer All-America recognition.
Nick Peoples
- Played for the Santa Barbara Foresters in the California Collegiate League (CCL) with fellow Longhorn Todd Gilfillan.
- Started 25 games for the Foresters and batted .322 while helping the club post a 51-10 overall record and claim the 2005 CCL Championship.
- Amassed a .467 on-base percentage to go along with 29 hits, 22 runs scored, 20 RBI and 17 stolen bases for head coach Bill Pintard's club. Also accounted for six doubles, two triples and one home run among his 29 hits during the summer campaign.
Jordon Street
- Played for the Denton Outlaws in the Texas Collegiate League (TCL) with twin brother and fellow Longhorns pitcher Juston Street.
- Struck out 29 over 22.2 innings of relief, which came over nine games, for head coach Derek Matlock's club while also collecting one win and boasting a 1.99 ERA.
- Aided the Outlaws in winning the TCL Championship after claiming the Rogers Hornsby Division title with a 28-23 record.
Juston Street
- Played for the Denton Outlaws in the Texas Collegiate League (TCL) with twin brother and fellow Longhorns pitcher Jordon Street.
- Made 16 relief appearances for head coach Derek Matlock and struck out 18 while walking none in his 25 innings on the mound. Also picked up two wins for the Outlaws while posting a 3.60 ERA.
- Helped lead the Outlaws to the TCL Championship after winning the Rogers Hornsby Division with a 28-23 record.
Drew Stubbs
- Played for head coach Steve Smith and Team USA with fellow Longhorn Kyle McCulloch.
- Appeared in 19 of the 20 games played by Team USA and batted .304 with five runs scored, three doubles, six RBI, a stolen base and an on-base percentage of .385.
- Helped lead the Americans to an overall record of 16-4, which included an 11-game winning streak to end the season.
Clay Van Hook
- Played for head coach Ed Cheff's Alaska Goldpanners in the Alaska Baseball League (ABL).
- Went a combined 14-for-60 (.233) over his 22 games, which included 16 starts, while scoring 12 runs and driving in seven en route to helping the Goldpanners win the 2005 ABL Championship with a 28-6 overall record.
