Longhorns notch eighth run-rule victory
AUSTIN, Texas — Behind a pair of six-spots, No. 2 registered a 16-4 run-rule victory over Incarnate Word at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night.
With the result, the Longhorns (27-5) earned a run-rule win for the eighth time this season.
Texas scored in five of its six trips to the plate against the Cardinals (16-17), highlighted by six runs in both the second and third frames. The Longhorns batted around in both innings, combining to record seven hits.
In the victory, all nine starting position players reached safely, as Ethan Mendoza, Carson Tinney and Temo Becerra all notched multi-hit performances.
Tinney smacked his fourth home run in his last 10 at-bats, launching a 431-foot blast that cleared the 32-foot monster in center. The junior finished 2-for-2 with four runs scored and two walks, capped off by his co-team-best 11th homer in the fifth.
Mendoza also left the yard, mashing a 388-foot jack over the YETI Yard in left. The sixth-inning shot marked his career-high eighth home run.
Texas used five arms in the seven-inning contest. Hudson Hamilton (1-0) logged the win, tossing 1 2/3 scoreless in relief of starter Kade Bing. Hamilton struck out three of the seven batters he faced.
Meanwhile, Ethan Walker, Max Grubbs and Brody Walls teamed up to retire seven of the last eight Cardinals.
Up next, the Longhorns face rival No. 18 Texas A&M in the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown at Blue Bell Park. The three-game set is slated to begin at 7 p.m. Friday.
